Leviticus (Part 8)

We’re always looking for ideas to get the most out of Dr. Jeannie’s lessons. With this in mind, the following questions were provided by Marianna Sayeg from the Bible study group at St. Mary’s Orthodox Church in Cambridge, MA. These questions are related to both Leviticus (Part 7) and Leviticus (Part 8).
  1. In the Christian tradition, the Pharisees are vilified, however Dr. Jeannie explains that they were actually rather progressive and merciful leaders in the Jewish tradition. How was this so?
  2. How does Origen allegorize the message of Leviticus?
  3. How is Yom Kippur celebrated in modern Jewish culture? How was it celebrated in antiquity? What are some other examples of how modern Jewish celebrations are very different from historical ones?
  4. What are some of the laws outlined in the “Holiness Code” in the last few chapters of Leviticus? Which ones no longer apply to us as Christians and which ones do we keep? How do we decide which ones to keep?
  5. If we believe in both physical and spiritual worlds, why do you think it is considered demonic to try to contact the dead/ spiritual world in this life? Isn’t this in a way what we are doing when we pray to the saints for intercession?
  6. What are the different explanations for what happened to the Ark of the Covenant and where do they occur in Scripture? Which is the official explanation offered by the Orthodox Church?
