We’re always looking for ideas to get the most out of Dr. Jeannie’s lessons. With this in mind, the following questions were provided by the Bible study group at St. Mary’s Orthodox Church in Cambridge, MA. These questions are related to both Joshua (Part 3) and Joshua (Part 4).
- Why did God deem it necessary for the Hebrews to kill the Canaanites? What was so detestable about the Canaanite religion? Why would the Hebrews have participated in worshipping the Canaanite gods?
- Was the killing in the Old Testament actually acceptable to God? Why don’t the Fathers really address this issue?
- How did the killing in the Old Testament lead to the formation of heretical groups in the early Christian church? What did they believe?
- What are Origen and John Chrysostom’s views on why these killing stories are included in the scriptures?
- What is the significance of Joshua’s prayer to stop the sun in the sky?
