We’re always looking for ideas to get the most out of Dr. Jeannie’s lessons. With this in mind, the following questions were provided by the Bible study group at St. Mary’s Orthodox Church in Cambridge, MA. These questions are related to both Introduction to the Prophets (Part 2) and Isaiah 53 (Part 1).
- What is the primary metaphor used in the prophets to understand God’s relationship to Israel? What is adultery representative of in this part of the Bible?
- Why was idolatry and worship of other gods such an issue at this time?
- What are the two main literary forms of the prophets? How do they differ?
- Where are some of the places in the New Testament where Isaiah 53 appears?
- What were some of the different expectations among the Jews of who the Messiah would be?
- Why did the Jewish leaders want to crucify Jesus? How do Christians use Isaiah 53 to argue against this? What is the Jewish interpretation of this “suffering servant”?
